Nazareth is a Scottish rock band that had several hard rock hits in the mid 1970s, including the Felice and Boudleaux Bryant penned ballad, “Love Hurts”.

Nazareth was formed in December 1968 in Dunfermline, Scotland, out of the ashes of semi-professional local group The Shadettes (formed in 1961) by vocalist Dan McCafferty, guitarist Manny Charlton (ex Mark V and The Red Hawks), bassist Pete Agnew, and drummer Darrell Sweet. They took their name from the first line of The Band’s classic song “The Weight” (“I pulled into Nazareth / Was feelin’ about half past dead…”)

The band moved to London, England in 1970, and released their self-titled debut album in 1971. After getting some attention with their second album Exercises, released in 1972, Nazareth supported Deep Purple on tour, and issued the Roger Glover produced, Razamanaz, in early 1973. This collection spawned two UK Top Ten hits, “Broken Down Angel” and “Bad Bad Boy”. This was followed by Loud ‘N’ Proud in late 1973, which contained another hit single with a hard-rocking cover of Joni Mitchell’s song “This Flight Tonight”. Then came another album Rampant, in 1974, that was equally successful although its only single, “Shanghai’ed in Shanghai”, narrowly missed the British Top 40. A non-album song, again a cover version, this time of Tomorrow’s “My White Bicycle”, was a UK Top 20 entry in 1975.

Hair of the Dog was released in April 1975. The title track of that album (popularly, though incorrectly, known as “Son Of A Bitch” due to its chorus lyrics) became a staple of 1970s rock radio. The American version of the album included a song originally recorded by The Everly Brothers, and also covered by Roy Orbison, the melodic ballad “Love Hurts”, that was released as a hit single in the UK and in the U.S., where it went platinum. The track became the band’s only U.S. Top Ten hit. The song spent a record-shattering 60 weeks on the Norwegian chart.

In 1979, second guitarist Zal Cleminson was added to the line-up, remaining for two albums, No Mean City and Malice in Wonderland, and contributing numerous compositions. Malice in Wonderland produced a popular AOR single called “Holiday”. In 1981, they contributed the song “Crazy (A Suitable Case for Treatment)” to the soundtrack to the film, Heavy Metal.

Various Nazareth line-ups continued to make studio albums and tour throughout the 1980s and 1990s, although their popularity had declined such that some albums no longer received either a UK or a U.S. release. They remained popular in Europe, particularly Germany, where “Dream On” became a hit single. Billy Rankin returned for a second spell in the ranks in 1991 for the No Jive album, replacing Manny Charlton who pursued a solo career.

An unlikely tribute came in 1993 when Guns N’ Roses covered Nazareth’s “Hair Of The Dog” on “The Spaghetti Incident?”, consolation after they turned down Axl Rose’s request for the group to play at his wedding. Rankin departed again in 1994, but with Jimmy Murrison and keyboard player Ronnie Leahy, Nazareth maintained a live following in Europe and the U.S.

In 1999, while touring the U.S., original drummer Darrell Sweet died at age 51 of a heart attack. He was replaced by bassist Pete Agnew’s son Lee for later editions of the band.

In February 2008, an album was released on the Hamburg based label Edel Entertainment entitled The Newz. The release of the album coincided with Nazareth’s fortieth anniversary tour which started on 25 January in Sweden and visited most of Europe, finishing on 4 November 2008 in Norway.

Sweet (referred to as The Sweet on albums before 1974 and singles before 1975) were a popular 1970s british band.

Although Sweet were largely known for their glam rock image, and several hit singles — many of them being so-called teenage anthems — they also released several albums throughout a ten year career.

The extent of Sweet’s domination of the charts in Europe resulted in eight number one singles in Germany, with pop oriented tunes as “Co Co”, “Little Willy”, and “Wig Wam Bam”. Sweet’s success continued with more rock oriented tunes, such as “Blockbuster”, “Hellraiser”, “Ballroom Blitz”, “Teenage Rampage”, and “Fox On The Run”. The group had a world-wide following (clocking up no less than 18 top 20 hit singles) and were most notably popular in the UK, Germany and Australia.

The classic Sweet line-up consisted of vocalist Brian Connolly, drummer Mick Tucker, bassist Steve Priest, and guitarist Andy Scott. Sweet are perhaps best remembered for their glam stage clothing - glitter, platform boots, chain mail shirts, and makeup - practically defining the camp extreme of the glam rock look. Scott would later say it only happened because they needed an excuse to meet Top of the Pops dancers Pan’s People and reasoned that going to the make-up room was a good method of doing so.

In late 1978, Sweet stayed at The Town House studio, Shepherds Bush, London, to write new material for their next album. Just before Brian Connolly announced his departure, his vocals were erased from the recorded material for the ensuing album Cut Above The Rest. Two album tracks titled “That Girl” and “Stay With Me” featuring Connolly on lead vocals remain from the late 1978 Cut Above The Rest recording sessions.

On February 23, 1979, Brian Connolly left the band under acrimonious circumstances, and neither he, nor the band, fully recovered. Connolly was particularly suffering from the effects of heavy alcohol drinking. Alhough all the Sweet members lived the extreme rock lifestyle during the 70s - with alcohol, drugs, and women, among other things - the others weren’t as severely affected as Brian. After Connolly’s departure, Sweet continued as a trio, with Scott and Priest now both handling lead vocals. Keyboard player Gary Moberley completed the four-piece line-up. Two more studio albums, Water’s Edge, and Identity Crisis were recorded in 1979 and 1980 before the group finally disbanded in 1981. Sweet performed their last live show at Glasgow University on March 20, 1981. In 1982, Identity Crisis was only released in Germany.

In 1985, Andy Scott and Mick Tucker re-formed Sweet with various new vocalists and bass players, the most notable being a 1986 reunion featuring Paul Mario Day (the first singer of Iron Maiden), keyboardist Phil Lanzon, and bass player Malcolm McNulty (who is now lead singer for fellow glam rock band Slade). Steve Priest was asked to join Tucker and Scott for the 1985 Australian tour, but declined at the last moment. Vocalist and bass player Jeff Brown joined in 1988. In 1991, Mick Tucker departed due to ill health, leaving Andy Scott as the only original member. He was replaced by German Bodo Schopf. After Tucker’s departure, Andy Scott changed the band’s name to ‘Andy Scott’s Sweet’.
Brian Francis [McManus] Connolly died from liver failure and repeated heart attacks, attributed to his chronic alcoholism, on 9 February 1997, aged 51.
Michael Thomas (Mick) Tucker died 14 February 2002 in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire from leukemia, aged 54.
At least one of Sweet’s two remaining members is still active in the music industry. Andy Scott currently continues to tour as ‘Andy Scott’s Sweet’.

Hello was a Bell Records label, teen appeal glam rock band, based in England.

They were formed in 1971, originally being called The Age. Their biggest success came in the UK and Germany in the mid 1970s.

Their Top 10 hits in the UK Singles Chart were “Tell Him” (a cover of The Exciters 1963 hit) and “New York Groove”, the latter of which was written by Argent band member Russ Ballard. “New York Groove” was later covered to provide a solo Billboard Hot 100 chart hit in the U.S., for the rock guitarist Ace Frehley of the rock band KISS.

By 1979, with no recording contract, the band split up, with former guitarist Keith Marshall releasing a solo effort, “Only Crying”, in 1981. It found a place in record charts worldwide.
